17 March 2008 Quintrex Flared Bow turns 40

Conceived by Quintrex founder Terry Quantrill and his right-hand man Bill Pigott in 1968, the Flared Bow was the first accentuated bow flare to be used on aluminium boats.

National Sales and Marketing Manager Damien Duncan said the Flared Bow enabled Quintrex’s aluminium boats to become more versatile, drier and stronger.

“Alloy boats had always proved excellent estuary and river going boats but Terry and Bill wanted Quintrex boats to be able to handle choppy sea like fibreglass boats that featured accentuated bow flares,” Damien said.

“After countless hours of trial and error with a variety of hull designs, Terry and Bill introduced the Flared Bow which was made possible through a revolutionary process called stretch-forming.

“The stretch-forming machine that enabled Quintrex to mass-produce the Flared Bow took two years to construct and is still used in our factory today. In fact, Terry’s son (Graeme Quantrill) recognised the machine he helped construct while on a factory tour last year.

“In 1968 the Flared Bow made boating history providing the first aluminium boat capable of standing on its nose in a sea with a load on board while keeping everyone and everything onboard dry.

“Today the Flared Bow continues to keep Quintrex passengers dry, provides lift when punching through waves and is featured on over 50 models,” he said.

The Flared Bow remains exclusive to Quintrex and has helped established the brand as Australia’s leading and most awarded aluminium boat range.
